Life of Adelaide Koeppen Porter
Adelaide Koeppen Porter was born in Angas St. Adelaide in 1875. Her parents were Thomas Drage Porter and Anna Wilhelmina Koeppen. Her father, Thomas, was a draftsman in the Surveyor General Dept and was destined to become the Deputy. His income provided the best education for Adelaide and by 1889, she was passing with excellent results her piano and singing lessons. She was awarded the Elder Scholarship which sent her to the Royal College of Music in London to complete her studies.
She married suddenly in 1900 to John Henry Fox, a Solicitor who was practising in Hawker in the Flinders Ranges of SA. She gave birth to a son, John Koeppen Fox in 1901. Her husband died in 1902.
Adelaide married Frank Leighton Robertson of North Adelaide in 1908. They made their home in Perth and had a music career that lasted for 20 or more years. She accompanied her husband in concerts as the pianist as well as solo singing.
In 1928, she and her daughter, Jean toured England for a year with her performing son, John Juan and his wife Zelda.
Adelaide lived to the age of 90. She died in South Perth in 1966 and her cremated ashes rest at Karrakatta Rose Garden together with those of her husband.
