"It may be in order for me to refer back to an episode which happened six miles south of Ardrossan where the Henderson family lived. It was about 1903 when the late Basil Henderson (born 1891) was digging a rabbit out of a burrow along the road, probably with the help of a dog. When he had dug far enough, as he thought, he put his hand in to grab the rabbit; instead, a snake fastened on to his finger. He killed the snake and went over to a neighbour's place but nobody was at home. So, placing his finger on a plough wheel he cut it off, an act of courage which saved his life. (The nearest doctor was at Maitland 20 miles from where this happened.) As the tomohawk was blunt this must have been very painful."
A pity that the notion of a constrictive bandage was unknown in those days! FB
Basil married Ms Dorothy Jean VANDEPEER on 7 Aug 1920. (Ms Dorothy Jean VANDEPEER was born in 1897 and died on 22 Apr 1993.)
