Tom was known as '"Jumbo Russell" Auntie Wyn Barrett knew Tom quite well. (ROS RUSSELL)
Tom was somewhat of a drifter. He married twice. His second wife, Ella died around 1961. Tom died around 1963. (MIDGE BEST & Jenetta Russell). When Bob moved to Sydney in 1960 he visited Tom when Vera was over for a visit. Tom lived beside Lake Macquarie in a small wooden home with a veranda. He had a jetty out into Lake Macquarie. During the war he used to grow and sell ducks to the locals. (Jenetta Russell)
In approx 1961 Ella died, after which Bob and family used to visit Tom for the weekend regularly. Tom became a sad and lonely person, with the famous statement he would make on a Sunday afternoon after Bob, Ros and children had spent the weekend there, "l don't know why you bother coming, you no sooner arrive and you leave again", As children Chris and Jenetta loved the visits, learning to fish off the jetty (mostly catching toads).
After Tom died, many more weekends were spent up at Lake Macquarie, cleaning up the old cottage. Tom had hoarded a great deal including tins of food from around the time of WW l.
It is believed that Tom had two children, a son and a daughter. The son was a playboy who had a relationship with an Australian well known actress. He went and lived in America and Hawaii. (Bob Russell)
