Adolf Otto Koeppen followed his father into the Prussian Army and fought in the Franco Prussian wars commencing in 1870. He had attained the rank of General by this conflict and it is believed he was awarded the Iron Cross for his actions in the Battle of Gravelotte - 18 August 1870.

1. Battle of Gravelotte: Scene from the Battle of Gravelotte, 18 Aug 1870, Gravelotte France. General Adolf Otto Koeppen was a commander in the Franco Prussian War commencing in 1870. He is believed to have won an Iron Cross for his actions in the Battle of Gravelotte on 18 August 1870.

There is reputedly a painting in the museum at Potsdam of a scene from the Battle of Gravelotte (18 August 1870) which features Otto.
